History of Langley Health Services

History of Langley Health Services

What is now known as Langley Health Services began in 1974 as Project Health, Inc.

Project Health, Inc. (PHI), was formed primarily to address the heath care needs of the agricultural workers in and around Sumter County. These workers, who made up a large majority of Sumter County’s population at the time, could not afford private physician care and therefore often went without much needed medical care.

In 1976, PHI received funding under the Migrant Health Center and  Community Health Center program. Medical services began that same year in a mobile unit located on an acre of land in Sumterville. By 1980, a total of 4 modular offices were in place and in 1981, dental services were added. The center utilized the services of physicians and dentists provided through the National Health Services Corps.

Thomas E. Langley, MD, was named the Executive Director of PHI in 1985. He was a physician employed by PHI who devoted his life to community efforts to help the poor. In 1987 the Pharmacy Department was added. Recognizing the need for further growth, Dr. Langley was instrumental in planning and developing a new facility, but unfortunately he never got to see it to completion; Dr. Langley passed away in 1987 and the new building was completed in 1988. The new building was dedicated to his memory, and in 1994 the building was renamed Thomas E. Langley Medical Center (TELMC).

Further growth over the years led to the need for even more space. A second building was constructed in 1994 to house Administration, the Pharmacy, and the Dental Department. A Pediatrics Department was also added at this time.

In the fall of 2006, Thomas E. Langley Medical Center realized a much anticipated dream: the opening of a brand new 41,000+ square foot health care facility. The new facility has made it possible for all clinical services to be provided under one roof. Prior to the new building, as many patients remember, modular buildings and trailers kept being used as more space was needed or new services were added. Now with all the departments in one building our patients have an easier time accessing the services they need.

In 2008 another dream was made a reality when Family Medical Center at the Shores (FMC) was opened in the Silver Springs Shores area near Ocala in Marion County. For many years the Board of Directors of TELMC had considered opening another location and recently they were able to do so. Even more exciting was the expansion of the Marion County site into a very large health center with services as comprehensive as those offered at Sumterville. To reflect the history of the center and embrace the future of continued growth, Project Health, Inc. changed its business name to Langley Health Services (LHS) In September of 2012.

Services now provided at LHS include Adult Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Podiatry, Behavioral Health, Dental, Radiology, and Pharmacy services. We also have a Walk-In clinic for patients who need to be seen without an appointment. LHS has contracted with several providers to offer additional services on site in Sumterville such as Laboratory, Dermatology, Cardiology, and Physical Therapy. In addition, LHS administers the Sumter County Healthy Start Program, which aims to reduce negative infant health outcomes through outreach and education.

LHS has continued to exhibit growth and on June 15, 2016, opened an office located at 120 North Montgomery Avenue, Inverness, Fl. This office offers primary care services, dental services for adults and pediatrics, behavorial healthcare, and podiatry services. Both medical and dental offices offer same day appointments as well as scheduled office visits. The offices accepts most insurances and offers clients the sliding fee discount scale for those that may qualify.

All sites are committed to serving all patients that come through our doors in a culturally and linguistically competent manner, and with dignity and respect. Our staff speaks English and Spanish, and will accommodate any other languages to the best of our abilities.
